SHANGHAI -- China's consumer prices were flat in September, according to official data that will likely fan concerns the world's No. 2 economy is sinking into deflation.

The consumer price index (CPI) was unchanged from the same month a year ago, China's statistics agency reported Friday as it pointed to falling food prices, after the gauge slipped into negative territory in July.
