TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plans to press lawmakers to cut the income tax by using surplus tax revenue as he seeks to help consumers struggling with high prices.

"We will work quickly to come up with ways to return" surplus revenues to taxpayers, Kishida told reporters Thursday.
