ISLAMABAD -- Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is due to return to Pakistan on Saturday after four years in exile, a major milestone on the nation's bumpy road to elections.

Experts say his imminent homecoming from London must have the tacit acceptance of the powerful military establishment -- and that Sharif's success or failure at rallying public support could determine the fate of polls expected around late January.
