AMD Frame Generation and 900p resolution now in ASUS ROG Ally handheld
ASUS ROG Ally has been updated to support HYPR-RX technology.
The ASUS ROG Ally console is powered by the AMD Ryzen Z1 (Extreme) processor, based on the Phoenix silicon architecture. This architecture leverages both Zen4 and RDNA3 architectures, delivering a great gaming experience while keeping power consumption low. Notably, the ROG Ally contributes to the expanding handheld AMD ecosystem with its 1200p 120Hz display. Such resolution and refresh rate are yet not within handheld’s reach for modern gaming titlles.
AMD has developed several technologies to enhance the gaming experience further, including RSR (Radeon Super Resolution), essentially a driver-level equivalent to FidelityFX Super Resolution, and more recently AFMF (AMD Fluid Motion Frames), which AMD refers to as “Frame Generation” technology, designed to boost performance.

With the introduction of HYPR-RX technology, AMD has integrated both of these technologies and introduced “Anti-Lag+” to create a user-friendly, one-click solution for performance enhancement. It’s worth noting that AMD had to remove this technology from the latest driver for discrete GPUs due to issues with some online titles, including potential bans.
However, the ROG Ally uses a dedicated driver that is separate from the official branch. Users can download this software directly from the ASUS website as an update for their console. It appears that while Anti-Lag+ may not function as expected, HYPR-RX remains operational.

Another aspect of this update centers around resolution support. The introduction of a 1600×900 resolution was a feature that received considerable attention from handheld users. Prior to this update, users were required to create custom profiles or utilize modifications to enable this resolution. This resolution, sitting between 720p and the native 1200p, provided a notable boost in performance. Given the dimensions of a handheld device of this nature, the 900p resolution appears to strike an excellent balance.
The new 331 BIOS update as well as new AMD graphics driver can now be downloaded from My ASUS application on the system.
