AMD Threadripper PRO 7995WX CPU breaks Cinebench world records with air cooler at 102°C and 980W

AMD’s $10K Threadripper PRO rips through world records

An expensive attempt with impressive results.

At the Threadripper 7000 launch event for the media, AMD did a short overclocking session where their top-of-the-line CPU broke many world records . But that’s just a glimpse of what the platform can do. One month later, AMD is sharing benchmark results from their own in-house overclocker SAMPSON, who broke not one but three Cinebnech world records.

The CPU used in this scenario is the Threadripper PRO 7995WX, positioned as the leading 96-core Zen4 processor within the “Storm Peak” series. It requires a new socket and is compatible only with new TRX50 and WRX90 motherboards. The ASUS WS TRX50 SAGE motherboard, with four 64 GB DDR5-6400 memory modules from G.Skill, was used for the overclocking session by SAMPSON.

With a 2.5 GHz base clock and a maximum boost clock of 5.15 GHz, this CPU boasts 384 MB of cache and supports up to 128 PCIe Gen5 lanes. The chip differs from the standard consumer model, as its specs are closer to a powerful EPYC-derived variant meant for workstations and, in this instance, for extreme clocking endeavors.

But the main problem is that it costs a lot of money, at $9999. This makes it too expensive for most gamers and enthusiasts. But for overclockers who get free units to break world records, amazing things can be done. Recent accomplishments in setting new world records for Cinebench R15, R20, and R23 illustrate the potential unlocked through such overclocking pursuits.

It’s even more impressive that this was done with an air-cooler at temperatures reaching as high as 102°C. This was possible thanks to ICEGIANT ProSiphon Elite CPU cooler, which is a massive quad-fan design. And in this case, the fans had to be running at full speed. This was necessary because, in this setup, the CPU consumes 976W to 980W, a value that would put many power supplies into everlasting sleep.

The TR PRO 7995WX, with a score of 161K points, is 33% faster than the TR PRO 5995WX of the previous generation, which has 64 Zen3 cores. It also surpasses Intel’s flagship Xeon W9-3495X chip with overclocking, the 96-core Threadripper is 22% faster.

Sampson broke three world records, and this is not the last word. He teases November 21st as a potential return with even better results, possibly employing liquid nitrogen this time. AMD will officially launch its Threadripper 7000 series tomorrow.
