Vera Rubin, an astronomer, to be commemorated by NVIDIA with a new architecture graphics name

Kopite7kimi might have, once again, spoil NVIDIA plans for future architecture name, sort of. This reputable hardware leaker has confirmed that the Blackwell-Next architecture, currently listed on NVIDIA roadmaps as ‘X’ should, in fact, carry ‘R’ letter. Without going into details after whom did NVIDIA name it.
However, if we look at Kopite’s accounts, a hint was left clearly mentioning Vera Rubin. We reached out to Kopite for confirmation and this is indeed the case and we are on good track, however it should be noted this could still change. The Rubin architecture would follow Blackwell, which scheduled for launch in 2024.
Vera Rubin (1928-2016) was an astronomer from the United States who made important discoveries about how fast galaxies rotate. She found that the predicted and observed angular motion of galaxies were different, which showed that dark matter exists.

Kopite has mentioned that NVIDIA is in the process of developing R100 and GR100 GPUs specifically designed for data centers. These GPUs are intended to take the place of the X100 and GX200, as outlined in the current NVIDIA roadmap. The information available does not clearly indicate whether the gaming architecture will also adopt the Rubin architecture. Kopite told us that the plans are not yet confirmed.
Therefore, saying that the GeForce RTX 60 series will utilize the Rubin architecture would be premature, as neither Rubin nor gaming Rubin GPUs have been officially confirmed at this moment.
