Alienware M18 (Ryzen 7945HX/Radeon 7900M) laptop issues can be fixed by using older AMD GPU drivers
The only laptop with a Radeon RX 7900M on the market is having a rough start.

There are both positive and negative developments regarding the Alienware M18 gaming laptop, manufactured by Dell. As a reminder, this is a high-end system equipped with AMD’s top-of-the line Ryzen 9 7945HX Dragon Range CPU and Radeon RX 7900M Navi 31 graphics. Enthusiasts who want an all-AMD system simply will not find any system with similar specs on the market because there is simply none. The Alienware M18 is the exclusive laptop design featuring these AMD graphics.
The launch of this laptop happened a few weeks ago, with many Techtubers already sharing their first-hand experience. However, those videos lacked comparisons and details that we normally get from full professional reviews. As soon as Notebookcheck’s review dropped this weekend, it was clear that the laptop has great performance and AMD can finally compete with Intel/NVIDIA high-end combo for gaming. But it is not without issues, and there were many.
The M18 issues were mostly related to the graphics and battery life. A reviewer has noted that the system’s primary screen will go dark and never go turn back on without reset when external monitors are connected. Furthermore, there were issues with system booting, frame skipping or stuttering in games. The worst problem affected battery life significantly, resulting in poor battery life when used only for internet browsing.
As it turns out, the fix is rather simple, but it goes against common instinct and AMD’s own recommendations. Instead of using the latest GPU drivers compatible with Radeon RX 7900M graphics, users are advised by Dell to use the older drier package from September, “31.0.14076.3” to be specific.
According to Dell, owners of the AMD-powered Alienware m18 R1 should install this specific display driver which is an older version from September 2023. Newer drivers, which we installed on our review unit, have not yet been optimized for the Alienware m18 R1 as of this writing which led to many of the issues we experienced. Users should therefore disable any Radeon auto-update features and stick with the older v31.0.14076.3, A01 driver for now even if AMD Adrenalin recommends otherwise. Dell themselves will push the update when newer drivers become ready at a future date.

The AMD software will still recommend upgrading this driver, but Dell says that users should not perform this update and should wait for the company update. As a result of reverting to older drivers, most of the issues have been resolved, including battery life on WiFi (browsing) to 3.5 hours.
It is quite common for OEMs to provide their own driver packages. For instance, handheld gaming systems such as ROG Ally come with special GPU drivers distributed by ASUS. But the RX 7900M is not a custom GPU, and it should rely on official driver release from AMD. By requiring users to wait for Dell updates, this means lack of support for the most recent game optimizations and features.
