Switch successor slipping to 2025

Nintendo is reportedly contacting game publishers to with a new launch date for the next-gen console.

The successor to Nintendo Switch is set to launch in Q1 2025 reports Brazilian outlet O X do Controle . This repot has already been corroborated by VideoGameChronicles, EuroGamer and Bloomberg. All of these reports suggest that the console is slipping out of its original late 2024 launch plans to next year.

Insider information came from game publishing studios, which were briefed about the delay of the next-gen console. The information suggests that one of the reasons behind this shift is Nintendo’s intention to bolster its lineup with more compelling first-party games upon launch.

“According to the sources, third-party game companies were recently briefed on an internal delay in Nintendo’s next-gen launch timing, from late 2024 to early the following year.”

“The console’s launch moving into early next year – but still within the coming financial year – is designed to ensure Switch 2’s launch line-up features as many titles as possible, Eurogamer understands,”

— EuroGamer, Tom Phillips

“Nintendo Co. is advising game publishers that its next-generation console will be delayed until the early months of 2025, according to people with knowledge of the matter,”

— Bloomberg, Takashi Mochizuki and Yuki Furukawa

Last year, VCG reported that Switch 2 was demoed running Unreal Engine 5 . The handheld was reportedly showcased behind closed doors at Gamescom. The system was supposedly able to run the Matrix Awakens demo with NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) enabled.

The support for DLSS has been long-rumored feature, especially given that the current-gen Switch is based on NVIDIA hardware. Furthermore, it was earlier reported that once docked, the Switch would be able to run games at 4K while using DLSS.

The current-gen Switch released in 2017 is based on the dated NVIDIA Maxwell architecture, which does not support NVIDIA DLSS. However, the current-gen handheld already takes advantage of other modern upscaling technologies like AMD FSR 2.1 in games like No Man’s Sky .

Based on the most recent rumors, Switch 2 could be using Tegra T239 which is reportedly based on Samsung 8nm node. This processor is said to feature 1536 CUDA cores based on the Ampere architecture. In November, Digital Foundry made an interesting video where they evaluate possible performance of such a chip.
