MSI locks firmware updates for its QD-OLED monitor to more expensive models

MSI will enable firmware updates only for MPG series, (most) MAG OLED monitors won’t support it

When hunting for a new monitor, it’s smart to consider how well the manufacturer has your back. Monitor companies are feeling the heat to deliver killer OLED monitors at gamer-friendly prices.

MSI might be a bit of a newcomer to the gaming monitor scene, but they’ve already dropped some seriously high-end gear. The company has recently introduced a lineup of QD-OLED monitors in different sizes, with a special nod to the 32-inch champ, often considered perfect for that 4K resolution.

Over on Reddit, MSI spilled more details on their QD-OLED monitor lineup, taking on the questions circulating in the community. Among them is the question of the price of the 32 inch version, which for some reason only applies to the US market. The MPG 321URX’s price tag in Europe is absurd, as it is listed for over 1400 euros at multiple retailers. Unfortunately, since this thread was started by the US employee, there is no answer to that question.

However, the important detail is regarding the firmware updates. As one can learn, MPG monitors will exclusively support firmware updates. This feature will not be available for most MAG models:

MSI employee later clarified that there will be no firmware update through MSI OSD or any different application. None of the MAG 27″ and 32″ monitors will support firmware updates. But there is an exception for the MAG 341CQP QD-OLED monitor.

The company will provide no updates for the $900 MAG 32-inch OLED monitor, but for just $50 more (the price of the MPG variant) users will be able to flash new firmware through the USB Type-C connector.
