Virtual 215-inch screen through Augmented Reality glasses, powered by AMD Hawk Point APU
A company called Tecno Mobile announces a new gaming handheld with AR glasses.
At MWC 2024, Chinese company Tecno Mobile, better known for its smartphones and laptops, is showcasing an entirely new concept of gaming handheld. The Pocket Go does not have a screen, instead it comes with an AR (Augmented Reality) glasses. The company believes that this approach will enable an entirely new gaming experience.
The Pocket Go is marketed as the smallest AR handheld on the market. The glasses, based on a 0.71-inch Micro-OLED display unit, support 0-600 Diopter adjustment, and it can also work with phones that have no DisplayPort output. The display should provide the visual experience of a 215-inch screen as perceived at a distance of six meters. Tecno advertises its product as a ‘6D immersive gaming experience’ through vision tracking, adaptive posture, realistic sound, ultra-precise vibrations, audio vibration and sensory synchronizations.

The handheld is powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 8840HS processor. This is the low-power variant of the 8845HS SKU, configurable to work within 20 to 30 watt power envelope. Tecno assures that their system can work efficiently up to 35W thanks to its cooler with 3 copper heatpipes. The APU comes with 8 Zen4 cores and Radeon 780M graphics with 12 RDNA3 Compute Units, which the same specs as many of the available gaming handhelds with Ryzen 7 7840U or Ryzen Z1 Extreme.

The Pocket Go is said to feature 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory and up to 1 TB of PCIe Gen5 SSD. The company is not confirming the exact specs of the memory or the form factor of the storage drive. It’s been confirmed that users can now replace 50Wh batteries, which is great for people who use their gaming systems on the ego. However, this will likely require either to plug the device to power for the battery switching or to save the game’s progress.

Tecno Mobile is yet to confirm the release date, pricing and full specs of their system. At MWC, the company also revealed an AI-powered robot that looks like this .
