OneXplayer X1 struggles against AMD-based systems

OneXplayer X1 is a handheld system that can work as a laptop, tablet and gaming device, depending on what accessories are purchased. The Spanish reviewer TuberViejuner was among those who received a unit for testing, effectively being one of the first to share his experience with the device.
Like with many early hands-on videos, we only get basic information and overview, however for those who even consider taking part in the crowdfunding campaign for this device, that should be a very interesting video.
Intel Core Ultra CPU series codenamed Meteor Lake were launched only in December last year, but there are few companies who are exploring the use of these chips for gaming purposes. The most popular one is MSI Claw, which is set to launch in just a few days, but companies like OneXplayer, Tecno or Emdoor are also working on their devices.
The X1 is a 3-in-1 system that has a detachable keyboard and controllers. It may act as a laptop with keyboard attached, but once game pads are attached it transforms the system into quite a large product equipped with 10.98″ screen. Such a size may not be very comfortable to hold, which is why the controllers can work remotely through an extra accessory, while the device has a built-in stand. Such design is very similar to Lenovo Legion GO, but comes with a larger screen and optional keyboard.
According to the review, the system’s strong points are good build quality thanks to a metal body, a 16 core Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor paired with 32GB of LPDDR5X ram (speed unspecified), a 10.98 inch IPS LTPS screen with 120 Hz refresh rate, good integrated speakers and large 65 WH battery that should provide 10 hours of battery life and 4 hours of gameplay (GTA 60FPS).
The reviewer has provided some charts for synthetic CPU and GPU benchmarks as well as some gaming experience.

In Cinebench tests, the Ultra 7 155H struggles to compete against AMD-based systems like AYANEO 2S or ROG Ally. The Intel CPU shines in synthetic GPU benchmarks, where it can easily top the charts and outperform AMD chips at the same or lower power. The only issue is that these benchmarks do not translate into real-life gaming performance.
The outcomes vary, with some game titles displaying promising results, while others deliver subpar performance. The device encounters difficulties in certain games, possibly attributed to Intel graphics drivers, notes the reviewer. On the other hand, emulation performance is a major feature that shows how well the X1 can handle platforms like Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 2.

The conclusion is that the device has potential but has performance issues mostly related to the GPU drivers and high price, which makes this product difficult to recommend. The cheapest version equipped with Core Ultra 5 125H retails at $939 while the cheapest Core Ultra 155H variant costs $1099. The model with 4TB as tested by TuberViejuner is not listed by the company.
Price is not the advantage, but the ability to convert the system easily into three different devices is something new and refreshing to see on the market. Hopefully, Intel will pull some miracle with GPU driver support, and we won’t read about another tech reviewer complaining about GPU driver stability, sadly this seems to be a common theme with all Arc-based handheld reviews.
Worth noting that there is a ONEXGPU upgrade available for X1 (as bundle), which is an external GPU based on Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU. The X1 has OCulink connector. The system is set to start shipping by the end of this month.
