Honor unveils laptop with 24GB LPDDR5X memory

Laptops with 12GB/24GB non-binary LPDDR5X memory already in the works

Shortly after the reveal of first 12GB memory for laptops, Chinese company Honor is already showing the first laptop using such memory.

Earlier this week, Crucial announced that laptop manufacturers will soon gain access to expanded memory capacities. Since the introduction of DDR5 memory two years ago, efforts have been underway to enable non-standard capacities like 12GB, 24GB, and 48GB for both consumers and OEMs. This development offers users new options and, in many instances, can lead to cost savings compared to doubling capacities.

It appears that Honor may be among the first to explore these expanded, non-binary capacities. A laptop featuring 24GB of memory has been seen in operation and has made its debut on Geekbench .

This system boasts a total capacity of 24GB based on LPDDR5X technology. Instead of relying on SODIMM modules, this laptop has 8 individual memory chips, each with a capacity of 3GB, totaling 24GB of LPDDR5X-6400 memory.

One should expect an increasing number of laptops offering 12GB and 24GB memory capacity options in the near future. This modification will enable higher-tier systems to transition from the standard 16GB capacity, whereas 32GB configurations are anticipated to persist in the high-end segment. Additionally, the utilization of 12GB SODIMM modules in enthusiast laptops could facilitate a 48GB capacity, provided the system incorporates four memory slots.
