Sony PSSR expected to deliver 4K 60 FPS or 8K 30 FPS for PS5 Pro, even more for future consoles
Insider Gaming has shared information related to the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) goals.

Starting with PlayStation 5 Pro, which is set to launch by the end of this year, Sony wants to rely on modern super resolution technology powered by machine learning. The PSSR technology, which was leaked last week , will be able to take full advantage of the new hardware in PSR5 Pro.
According to Insider Gaming, Sony has set a performance goal for PSSR on PS5 Pro to 4K 60 FPS or 8K 30 FPS. The currently planned hardware (60 CU RDNA3) will not be able to provide more performance, but in the future with new console release PSSR could evolve to support 4K 120FPS and 8K 60 FPS, it is stated. Importantly, it is not mentioned if that involves any type of frame generation.
PSSR Performance targets:
- PS5 Pro: 4K 60 FPS or 8K 30 FPS
- PS5 Pro-Next: 4K 120FPS or 8K 60 FPS
The site shared Sony’s internal performance estimates from using PSSR on PS5 Pro and how it compares to PS5. The new console will be able to deliver 60 FPS at 1440p resolution with PSSR used, compared to PS5 running 1080p at 60 FPS and 1800p at 30 FPS. The PSSR5 has a goal to deliver image quality similar to Fidelity Mode while maintaining 60 FPS of Performance mode.
- Standard PlayStation 5 –
- Performance Mode – 1080p at 60FPS
- Fidelity Mode – 1800p at 30FPS
- PlayStation 5 Pro
- 1440p at 60FPS (PSSR used)
In another game using PSSR and power by PS5 Pro improved RDNA3/RDNA4 GPU with 2-3x faster ray tracing acceleration, the console would enable the same 60 FPS experience but with added ray tracing.
The site has reiterated that PSSR will require 250MB of memory, but it is added that 180MB of that comes from PSML Library (PlayStation Machine Learning) and 64MB from the game.
