AMD submits Zen5 patches in time for GCC 14.1 stable release

First Zen5 patches merged with GCC 14, but it’s not full support yet

AMD has just submitted necessary patches for the Zen5 microarchitecture to be supported by the next stable version of GNU Compiler Collection (GCC).

Phoronix reports that AMD Zen5 parches for GCC 14 have been merged, just in time for the upcoming stable release. This means that AMD Zen5 CPU enablement has been added well before any EPYC or Ryzen product has been released featuring this new architecture.

The actual patch is not the full support for Zen5, rather, it uses replicated Zen4 code, as pointed out by the patch details. However, this being added now means that AMD can later fill in the missing details and while initial support is already present in the stable GCC library.

As revealed earlier, the ‘Znver5’ patch confirms support for several instructions including AVXVNNI, MOVDIRI, MOVDIR64B, AVX512VP2INTERSECT, and PREFETCHI. As mentioned before, some instructions are already supported by Intel Tiger Lake but were not part of AMD Zen before.

The GCC 14.1 stable release is expected in the coming weeks. AMD has confirmed that the first Zen5 products to launch are Strix Point and Granite Ridge series, both expected to hit the market this year, possibly within the next couple of months. The company is also working on enabling Zen5 in high-end mobile platforms such as Fire Range and Strix Halo, reportedly scheduled to launch next year.
