SK hynix wants to make even faster GDDR7 memory
HardwareLuxx who are attending GTC 2024 discovered that the Samsung booth shows the GDDR7 already on display, turns out that’s not the only company.

During GTC 2024, NVIDIA unveiled its plan for the upcoming Blackwell GPU architecture. Alongside NVIDIA’s presentations, attendees could explore the latest offerings from memory companies. Samsung, for instance, is gearing up to introduce its 28 Gbps and 32 Gbps memory modules tailored for next-generation gaming GPUs. Meanwhile, Hynix is taking a step ahead by confirming the development of modules supporting even faster speeds.
Worth reminding that it was Samsung who claimed to be working on 37 Gbps memory, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the fastest GDDR7 memory currently being discussed. It looks like SK Hynix will release 40 Gbps at some point, or at least that’s their performance target for the entire G7 family.

Additionally, Hynix has confirmed plans to introduce 16 Gbit and 24 Gbit memory modules. The latter, with a capacity of 3 GB, will enable companies like AMD or NVIDIA to introduce entirely new memory configurations while maintaining the same number of memory chips.
Currently, the NVIDIA RTX 50 series is slated to be the first product featuring GDDR7 memory, expected to enter the market by year-end. These series will reportedly utilize a memory speed of 28 Gbps , leaving room for 32Gbps+ speeds in next-generation products. While the likelihood of seeing 40 Gbps on a consumer chip is slim, a reduction of around 10% or so is now within the realm of possibility.
