AMD Ryzen Threadripper helped to 3D map Acatraz Island

3D mapping Alcatraz with help from Ryzen Threadripper

AMD is preparing for a webinar set for next week that will discuss how the company’s hardware helped in a very unusual project.

According to the event description, AMD collaborated with VCTO Labs to create a digital replica of Alcatraz Island. This historic location, situated just offshore from San Francisco, holds significant importance in American history, serving various purposes throughout the mid-19th century, including as a lighthouse, military fortification, and prison. Those who are not familiar with American history, may at least know the Island from popular films such as “Escape from Alcatraz” (1979) and “The Rock” (1996).

Maintaining the virtual integrity of this iconic site requires substantial computing power. AMD’s hardware, including Ryzen Threadripper PRO workstations, helped the capture of Alcatraz Island in detailed 3D.

The 3D model of the island will support virtual tourism and educational initiatives. While Alcatraz is already designated as a National Park, this development positions it to become the first virtual national park once the rendering is complete. Further insights into the process and the visual representation will be unveiled during an upcoming AMD webinar scheduled for next week.
