Relic Entertainment parts ways with SEGA, becomes independently-run studio

Development on Company of Heroes 3 continues, but Relic studio is now independent of Sega.

Relic Entertainment, better known for its Company of Heroes franchise, will no longer receive investment from SEGA. This development studio will now continue to operate independently.

Company of Heroes 3 is a real-time strategy game set in World War 2 theater, succeeding the iconic series that began in 2006 and was updated in 2015 with Company of Heroes 2. Interestingly, the latter was a much bigger success than the third version, which has left the fan base with a rather mixed response. It has reached a point where gamers have shown more interest in the older game, and even today, there are more players actually playing the older title.

Relic has just announced it will become an independent-run studio without investment with SEGA. The hope is that without SEGA as an investor, Relic will have more flexibility when it comes to revamping the game to what was supposed to be a true successor to COH3. Currently, the game is set to receive a 1.6 “Coral Viper” update in April as planned.

The most recent “Hammer & Shield” DLC, which was released last year, has received nothing but overwhelmingly negative feedback from the community. With mostly negative reviews on distribution platforms, gamers have agreed that it was an overpriced scam that offered very little for its $17 price.

The recent developments are promising for the franchise, offering hope for revitalizing COH3, a game just over a year old. The game still enjoys strong backing from the community, which actively creates its own maps. However, Relic, has not yet revealed its plans for 2024.
