Myanmar resistance seizes border town; Thailand braces for refugees

MAE SOT, Thailand -- Myanmar's resistance forces, led by the Karen National Union, began consolidating control over the key trading hub of Myawaddy, on the border with Thailand, following days of armed conflict with Myanmar's military regime.

KNU spokesmen confirmed on Thursday that the group's forces, along with allied people's defense force fighters, had defeated Myanmar military units around Myawaddy. Photos on the KNU's Facebook page showed triumphant troops posing below the entrance sign to Myawaddy town and vast weapons hauls seized from fallen military posts after days of fighting. The number of casualties is unknown.
