TOKYO -- Asia on Sunday awoke to a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East, as Iran lobbed explosive drones and missiles in its first direct attack on Israel .

The U.S. and many other Western allies immediately condemned Iran's move, amid fears that it could mark a dangerous widening of the conflict that has shaken the Middle East and the world over the last six months, including severe disruptions to shipping in the Red Sea.
