SHANGHAI -- Chinese President Xi Jinping met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, as the world's second- and third-largest economies seek to improve ties amid rising geopolitical tensions and spiraling conflicts.

Xi told Scholz that their bilateral relations would continue to develop as long as both sides "respect" each other and seek common ground, according to initial reports. He said the ties must be viewed from a long-term perspective.
