Intel statement on Core i9 stability concerns
Intel has issued the first statement on user reported Core i9 processors stability issues. The company has put the blame on motherboard vendors who do not follow Intel specs.

There would hardly be any difference in motherboard performance if it weren’t for certain features that allow users to disable or adjust power, voltages, and frequency settings. It’s clear that these companies tend to offer more powerful features out of the box, which also looks good in reviews when each board is compared to the others. The problem arises when motherboards enable these features automatically.
Intel has finally issued a statement placing the blame on motherboard vendors who allow Intel CPUs to operate out of specs. The company is still validating the root cause for Intel CPUs running outside recommended specs, but Intel confirms that the majority of reports were with said unlocked motherboards.
Officially, there will be a second statement once the problem is fully diagnosed, but the recommendations have already been published. This is in case motherboard vendors are too slow to offer the “Intel Baseline Profiles” that should restore official Intel specs for affected CPUs. These options were listed in the statement below.
Intel® has observed that this issue may be related to out of specification operating conditions resulting in sustained high voltage and frequency during periods of elevated heat.
Analysis of affected processors shows some parts experience shifts in minimum operating voltages which may be related to operation outside of Intel® specified operating conditions.
While the root cause has not yet been identified, Intel® has observed the majority of reports of this issue are from users with unlocked/overclock capable motherboards.
Intel® has observed 600/700 Series chipset boards often set BIOS defaults to disable thermal and power delivery safeguards designed to limit processor exposure to sustained periods of high voltage and frequency, for example:
- Disabling Current Excursion Protection (CEP)
- Enabling the IccMax Unlimited bit
- Disabling Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) and/or Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost (eTVB)
- Additional settings which may increase the risk of system instability:
- Disabling C-states
- Using Windows Ultimate Performance mode
- Increasing PL1 and PL2 beyond Intel® recommended limits
Intel® requests system and motherboard manufacturers to provide end users with a default BIOS profile that matches Intel® recommended settings.
- Intel® strongly recommends customer’s default BIOS settings should ensure operation within Intel’s recommended settings.
- In addition, Intel® strongly recommends motherboard manufacturers to implement warnings for end users alerting them to any unlocked or overclocking feature usage.
Intel® is continuing to actively investigate this issue to determine the root cause and will provide additional updates as relevant information becomes available.
Intel® will be publishing a public statement regarding issue status and Intel® recommended BIOS setting recommendations targeted for May 2024.
The Intel 14th Gen Core and 13th Gen Core i9 SKUs, primarily affected by these issues, have been on the market for months and even years. It’s puzzling why Intel is only taking action now, but the increased stability concerns, particularly with the higher clocked i9-14900K series, likely prompted Intel to take action.
Intel is correct to call motherboard vendors who provided default profiles with optimization features enabled. From a technical standpoint, running any CPU outside of specifications could be interpreted as overclocking, potentially voiding the warranty. What is unclear is why has Intel waited this long to enforce these specs, motherboard ‘optimizations’ features have been present in high-end motherboards for years now.
