NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 with AD103 GPU has been spotted

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 variant confirmed to feature AD103 GPU

The new variant of RTX 4070 has been spotted by developers of GPU-Z software.

A few weeks ago, a rumor emerged suggesting that NVIDIA would release new variants of the RTX 4070 and 4060 series. These cards would feature non-standard GPU variants, typically utilizing larger dies with heavily reduced core counts. Such a practice of reusing larger GPUs for mid-range SKUs has actually been quite common, especially among cards distributed in Asia.

By employing larger GPUs for mid-range models, NVIDIA has a means of selling GPUs that would otherwise not match the specifications of even the official cut-down variants. In the AD103 case, this GPU boasts 80 Stream Multiprocessors, but only 76 are utilized for the original RTX 4080 and 66 for the RTX 4070 Ti. Now, NVIDIA is marketing the full 80 SM variant as the RTX 4080 SUPER. It turns out this high-end GPU has found its way into the RTX 4070 non-SUPER model, which only features 46 SMs, thus requiring 36 to be disabled on the AD103 core.

Today, TechPowerUP confirmed that such models are already on the market, and one of their readers reached out regarding the AD103-powered RTX 4070 Ventus 3X E model from MSI. It turns out this card is not using the standard AD104 GPU but the new AD103-175.

In any case, GPU-Z will be updated to support these new variants, and those who purchase such cards should not be surprised if their card has a new GPU. NVIDIA did not publicly announce this, but since such SKUs are listed in the drivers, one can assume that sales of these non-standard versions will be limited to certain countries, mainly China.
