Sony backs down from PlayStation account requirement for Helldivers 2

This weekend was not a good one for the Helldivers 2 community. The game was set to receive an update that would require gamers to use a Sony PlayStation Network account starting today. This decision was met with overwhelmingly negative feedback and a negative review bomb for the game. This did not go unnoticed at Sony headquarters.
Today, Sony has announced that the decision to introduce PlayStation account linking for the game will be shelved. The only required account will be Steam, which means that players in countries where PlayStation accounts aren’t available will still be able to play the game.
Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.
We’re still…

Helldivers 2 has received thousands of negative comments, with a significant portion submitted over the past three days. As a result, the game’s rating has shifted to overwhelmingly negative. This highlights the influential voice of the gaming community. Sony should reconsider its approach to how should games be released on the PC platform in the future. Instead of mandating PlayStation accounts, the company could have incentivized gamers to link their accounts by offering rewards.
Helldivers 2, a sci-fi action game known for its intense cooperative gameplay, has made a strong impact with its launch on the PC platform under Sony. Its success shows the potential for Sony to expand its gaming offerings on PC even further. Now, more than ever, Sony will have to communicate its plans sooner and listen to the gamers’ feedback.
