NVIDIA RTX 5090 & 5080 announcement later this year

The company plans to launch its new GPUs one by one.

According to XpeaGPU, NVIDIA is set to launch its new flagship RTX 5090 and high-end RTX 5080 GPUs within a few weeks of each other. Both SKUs are expected to be announced simultaneously in 2024, possibly also this year.

This claim backs up comments by Kopite7kimi, who stated that NVIDIA intends to release the 5080 first, despite previous reports suggesting that the 5090 might be the only GPU launched this year. The idea that both SKUs might have staggered launches, with the RTX 5080 potentially arriving before the 5090, shouldn’t be surprising. In 2020, NVIDIA launched the RTX 3080 two weeks prior to the RTX 3090, and both cards were unveiled at the same time.

If recent rumors hold true, the GB203 GPU is expected to offer approximately half of what the GB202 provides, boasting 96 SMs compared to the 192 SMs of its predecessor. Additionally, reports suggest that the GB203 GPU will feature a 256-bit memory bus, while the largest Blackwell GPU might debut with a 512-bit memory width.

Recently, it was disclosed that NVIDIA is in the process of selecting the final cooling solution for its RTX 50 models, ranging from 250W to 600W. These figures likely refer to the heat dissipation capacity rather than the actual power consumption of these cards. In any case, this suggests that one may soon have the opportunity to look at RTX 50 coolers up close, given that almost for every launch there was a cooler design leak months ahead of the announcement.
