AMD to drop Ryzen H/HS/U naming in favor of one (HX?) branding covering various TDP ranges, claims Lenovo Product Manager
On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, a Lenovo ThinkBook Product Manager revealed that AMD is planning to change and apparently simplify product naming starting with the next release.
This claim follows the revelation that ASUS is planning to use the Ryzen AI HX 170 processor in their upcoming Vivobook S 16 laptop. This is apparently the new name for the AMD Strix Point series powered by Zen5 architecture. Instead of using various sub-series such as 100U (15W), 100H (35W), and 100HS (45W), the new series will feature one product name, such as HX 170, that will cover all TDP ranges.
Ultimately, this means that the new SKU naming will indeed be simpler, but at the same time, customers will have a much harder time distinguishing between SKUs in the actual product. The best example is the lightweight laptop chassis, which is often limited to 15W, and high-end gaming systems using 45W+ TDP.
Thus far, we have not seen any confirmation of this change, but leaks have already mentioned the Ryzen AI HX 170 SKU and apparent Ryzen AI 165 models. The fact that AMD would plan one branding for its entire Strix Point series suggests that such processors would launch with configurable TDP in the 15 to 54W range. The currently known lineup could end up looking like this:
