3DMark Steel Nomad: the cross-platform non-ray traced test launches tomorrow, first results released

GeForce RTX 4090 leads the 3DMark Steel Nomad charts

PC Games Hardware tested the new 3DMark/UL benchmark called Steel Nomad.

Tomorrow, 3DMark will release their new raster benchmark called Nomad, set to succeed Time Spy, which was released in three performance profiles. The new benchmark comes in two versions: 3DMark Nomad for 4K resolution and 3DMark Nomad Light for 1440p resolution.

Nomad runs on both DirectX 12 and Vulkan APIs and is a cross-platform benchmark. It will launch on Windows X86 and Windows ARM versions first, with Linux and macOS versions to follow. Additionally, the “Light” version will be available on Android and iOS at a later date.

PC Games Hardware has conducted initial tests of the new 3DMark Nomad benchmark on a high-end PC powered by a Core i9-13900KS and DDR5-7600 memory. The test system used the latest drivers from AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel, with AMD SAM or ReBar enabled based on the configuration.

Here are some key findings from their tests:

  • The RTX 4090 outperforms the RTX 4080 SUPER by 43%.
  • The RTX 4070 is 1300% faster than the GTX 970.
  • Intel’s Arc A770 GPU performs similarly to the Radeon RX 6700 XT.

The RTX 4090 is the only GPU to score over 40K points in the Light benchmark, achieving 43.2K points at stock settings and up to 46.3K points with maximum overclocking. AMD’s fastest GPU, the RX 7900 XTX, scores 28.9K points at stock settings and 31.7K points when overclocked. This results in a performance gap of 46% to 49% between the RTX 4090 and the RX 7900 XTX.

The possible goal for next-gen GPUs is to surpass 12K points in Nomad and 50K points in Nomad Light tests.
