AMD FSR3 with frame generation launches on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles with Immortals of Aveum

Frame Generation enters gaming consoles through FSR3 update for Immortals of Aveum

“The Immortals of Aveum” is among the first PC games to feature AMD FSR3 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 3). This technology includes an updated upscaling algorithm and introduces optional frame generation technology.

This first-person shooter debuted in August 2023 on all major platforms, but at launch, only FSR2 technology was available for PCs. The FSR3 update arrived about a month later, although the game already supported frame generation via NVIDIA DLSS.

For the first time, a console game will officially support frame generation. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions have been updated to support FSR3 with Frame Generation.

AMD FSR 3 UPDATES ARRIVE ON CONSOLE AND PC

For the first time ever on console, AMD FSR 3 with Frame Generation is releasing today in Immortals of Aveum on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. We’re thrilled Immortals of Aveum is the first game to implement this exciting new console tech update for players, and we couldn’t have done it without our incredibly talented partners over at Enduring Games.

FSR 3 uses a combination of super resolution temporal upscaling technology and frame generation to deliver smoother framerates in supported games. This technology uses optical flow technology and temporal game data such as motion vectors to generate additional high-quality frames for a higher framerate. On PC, FSR 3 has been updated to a newer, better version which further improves visual quality and performance of its temporal upscaling.

The launch of frame generation on consoles was inevitable, given AMD’s progress with their RDNA architectures supporting this technology and the open-source nature of this upscaling tech. One should expect more games to be updated with frame generation later.

Upscaling technologies have been present in modern gaming consoles for a few years now. Sony is developing its own technology called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, which focuses primarily on upscaling. Leaked documents did not specifically mention frame generation technology, but it is possible that it will be added as an option through the SDK at some point.
