Gigabyte confirms new B840 chipset: no CPU OC support and no PCIe Gen5

AMD B840 chipset replaces the cheaper B650 series

Gigabyte leak has confirmed a new chipset for the upcoming AM5 Ryzen CPUs.

AMD will introduce at least four new chipsets for its AM5-based CPUs. The X670E and X670 chipsets will be succeeded by the X870E and X870, respectively. The Extreme variant, X870E, will feature two Promontory21 chipsets, while the X870 will have only one. The X870 series will support PCIe Gen5 x16 and at least one PCIe Gen5 SSD.

Changes are also coming to the mid-range segment. The B650E and B650 chipsets will be replaced by the B850 and B840 , respectively. This marks the introduction of the X40 class in the AMD portfolio, using a different chipset (Prom19) compared to the higher-tier boards. The main difference between the B850 and B840 is that the B840 will not support CPU overclocking, though both will support memory overclocking. The B840 also lacks PCIe Gen5 support.

So far, Gigabyte has confirmed one B840 motherboard, the B840M DS2H.

There are no changes to the A620/A chipset, which will continue to be sold as the entry-level option. The B840 chipset was first mentioned by Moore’s Law is Dead back in January, and it appears to match the leaked specifications perfectly. Gigabyte has confirmed that the 800-series chipsets will support up to 8000 MT/s memory through EXPO overclocking profiles. Additionally, there will be an Infinity Fabric increase to 2400 MHz, up from 2000 MHz.
