True dual-screen laptops revealed at Computex
ACEMAGIC and GPD have revealed their innovative laptop designs featuring two screens of identical size. Unlike existing laptops like the ASUS Zephyrus Duo line, these new laptops achieve this with sophisticated folding mechanisms, each with its unique approach.

The GPD Duo, teased prior to Computex, is touted as the world’s first dual-screen laptop with OLED displays. Unlike previous attempts, which involved 2-in-1 devices or laptops with different panel technologies or mismatched screen sizes, the GPD Duo features two screens of identical size. The laptop’s base, which houses all components, is stationary and heavier than the screens to support the dual-screen setup.
The GPD Duo is equipped with a Ryzen 7 8840U processor and supports up to 96GB of LPDDR5-7500 memory. It comes with an 80Wh battery and supports two PCIe Gen4x4 SSDs in M.2 2280 form factor, with each slot supporting up to 8TB, for a maximum capacity of 16TB. GPD claims the laptop will run with the APU at 35W by default, with an option to increase power output to 60W. Memory options range from 16GB to 96GB, though the memory is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

GPD claims the laptop offers up to 30.2 hours of battery life with a single screen set to 150 nits and connectivity options turned off while playing locally hosted video. Typical battery life is around 14 hours.
Potential buyers might be interested in another feature of this laptop: it supports USB Type-C connection through DisplayPort Alt Mode, allowing the secondary screen to be used as an external monitor for devices like smartphones. Detailed information on this feature and the necessary cables is available from GPD. Additionally, the laptop supports OCuLink, reflecting GPD’s expertise in gaming handhelds and external GPUs.

ACEMAGIC Z1A
ACEMAGIC’s dual-screen laptop, the Z1A, features a different design. Its screens fold horizontally, which may be less convenient for transforming the device into a portable screen compared to GPD’s vertical folding design. However, this horizontal design might be more natural for users who frequently use two screens.

The Z1A is not aimed at the high-end market, as it comes with older Alder Lake CPUs. Specifically, it can be configured with either the Core i7-1265U or Core i5-1255U processors. ACEMAGIC has not fully revealed their design yet, but it is confirmed to feature LPDDR4-3200 memory and support up to two M.2 2280 SSDs. The laptop measures 32.2 x 22.2 x 2.1 cm and weighs 1.8 kg.
