Kraken Point already in the works by AMD

A new GFX ID has been spotted.

AMD has just announced its Strix Point silicon at Computex, its first Zen5 APU. This is just the beginning for the next-gen APU series from AMD, as the company is also developing its Strix Halo and Kraken Point silicons, set to release next year.

It was previously revealed that Kraken Point will feature four Zen5 and four Zen5c cores, which is four cores fewer than Strix Point. It is also said to have reduced GPU specs, also based on the RDNA3.5 architecture. Instead of the 16 CUs, the smaller APU will have 8, the same amount as the Van Gogh/Sephiroth APU used in the Steam Deck, which relies on RDNA2.

The new GFX ID has just been spotted in Linux open-source drivers. Namely, the GFX1152, which follows GFX1150 and GFX1151, both already confirmed to be Strix Point and Strix Halo respectively.

AMD RDNA3.5 GPUs

  • GFX1150 – Strix Point
  • GFX1151 – Strix Halo
  • GFX1152 – Kraken Point 🆕

AMD Kraken Point is said to be launching in 2025, the same year AMD is expected to release Fire Range and Strix Halo. Kraken Point appears to be a strong candidate for a handheld APU, with specs nearly identical to Intel Lunar Lake (8 CPU cores, 8 GPU cores) and the Steam Deck APU.

AMD has yet to confirm the existence of this silicon and provide details, such as the TDP target. It is also unclear if the APU will be part of the new Ryzen AI 300 series or its successor. What seems to be confirmed, though, is that it will feature the same XDNA2 NPU unit, so “AI” is likely to be part of the name.
