AMD explains why Ryzen 9000 with 8 cores doesn’t need higher TDP but lower

Ryzen 9000 brings more performance without increasing power, gaming experience very close to X3D series

In a recent interview with T om’s Hardware , AMD talked about the upcoming Ryzen 9000 series, scheduled for release next month. A very popular topic that was discussed extensively later was the reduced power requirements of the new series compared to the existing 7000-series chips, particularly for the 8 and 6-core variants. AMD explained the reasoning behind this reduction.

The company has successfully lowered the power demand for the new SKUs from a 105W TDP to just 65W. Traditionally, AMD has used 65W for its non-X variants, which are lower-tier products with reduced frequencies. However, for the Zen5-based series, AMD indicated that their 8-core CPU doesn’t require a higher TDP but lower, enabling them to reduce the power consumption effectively.

All of those things are pretty big differences compared to previous small steps and launches. We’re going back on TDP because it turns out our eight cores are so good we don’t need higher TDP, so I think it’s a pretty stark comparison,

David McAfee further states that lower power targets allow AMD to deliver more performance without increasing power and heat. The Ryzen 9000 SKUs have the same maximum frequency, but the frequency residency, efficiency of the lid, and thermal changes allowed AMD to lift the performance higher.

In fact, McAfee says they brought their 9000 series “very close to X3D” chips in terms of gaming. As already stated by Donny Waligroski in the same interview, the AMD Ryzen 9000 series will not be faster for gaming than existing 7000X3D models, but they will be close enough. After this statement, one should now be asking about the pricing strategy because the new series, being slower in gaming, shouldn’t cost much more.
