Counter Strike marks its 25th anniversary

Counter Strike 2 is now 25 years old, still the most popular on Steam

On this day 25 years ago, the first public version of Counter Strike was released under beta. The final release took place in November the same year.

Counter Strike is a tactical, team-based first-person shooter, which today celebrates its 25th anniversary. It was originally launched as a modification of Half-Life (hence the cover above), which was released on June 19, 1999, but the popularity grew substantially in 2000 when the first version of the standalone game was released thanks to Valve’s involvement.

Over the years, the game’s popularity has remained consistent, and despite the release of Counter-Strike 2 last year, the core gameplay is largely unchanged. Over the years, various updates enhanced gameplay mechanics, introduced new maps, customizations and incorporated an anti-cheat system.

Counter-Strike expanded with different versions, including Condition Zero and Source, which brought single-player options and advanced graphics, respectively. However, it was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) in 2012 that significantly impacted the series. With new maps, weapons, and customizable skins, CS:GO also introduced a battle royale (Danger Zone) mode in 2018. The switch to a free-to-play model further increased its player base, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • 2000 : Counter Strike (standalone release)
  • 2004 : Counter Strike: Condition Zero, Counter Strike: Source
  • 2008 : Counter Strike: Online
  • 2012 : Counter Strike: Global Offensive
  • 2023 : Counter Strike 2

Counter-Strike 2, released in September 2023, replaced CS:GO and continued to carry the legacy with technical and graphical improvements via the Source Engine 2. Despite initial mixed reactions from gamers, the new features, including dynamic smoke and server tick rate adjustments, have been largely accepted. The game now boasts record-breaking daily player peaks, reaffirming its position as the most played game on Steam.
