AMD discounts Ryzen 8000G series

AMD lowers the price of Hawk Point ahead of Ryzen 9000 launch.

AMD has reduced prices for its desktop Hawk Point series across the entire range. Each processor is now $20-$30 cheaper, and this appears to be a planned price change rather than a temporary discount as all major retailers are reflecting these new prices.

The AMD Ryzen 8000G series went on sale in January this year, combining the long-awaited Zen4 and RDNA3 debut for the AM5 socket. There’s no doubt that AMD was in no rush to launch these APUs, and that’s despite the Phoenix (Ryzen 7000) being available for laptops for over a year. The Hawk Point series uses essentially the same silicon but with enhanced XDNA2 AI processor performance.

There are three SKUs available, featuring either 8 or 6 Zen4 cores. The Ryzen 5 8500G includes a smaller Hawk Point silicon, utilizing both Zen5 and Zen5c cores. More importantly, the series features up to 12 RDNA3 Compute Units (8700G), 8 CUs (8600G) or 4 CUs (8500G).

Retailers like Amazon and Newegg have reduced the prices for each SKU. The 8700G and 8600G models are now $30 cheaper, while the 8500G is $20 below the official MSRP from late May.

Next month, AMD is set to launch its Ryzen 9000 processors, featuring the new Zen5 architecture. However, these CPUs will not include high-performance integrated graphics or the XDNA AI accelerator. AMD is yet to announce its plans for the Strix Point series, which will combine Zen5, RDNA3.5, and XDNA2, for desktops. Given how late APU architectures are brought to desktops, this may take some time.
