Minisforum DEG1 supports RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX graphics

The company has launched its first eGPU dock.

Minisforum has quickly adopted OCuLink across many of its devices. However, until now, they hadn’t offered any peripherals that utilized this connection. OCuLink provides higher bandwidth compared to Thunderbolt 3/4, approaching full PCIe 4.0×4 or 3.0×4 speeds, which is especially important for high-end GPUs which loose up to 20% of their performance if Thunderbolt is used and much less with OCuLink.

With the recent release of the AtomMan X7 Ti, Minisforum also announced its new external graphics card dock. Just weeks after its presentation, the DEG1 eGPU dock is now available.

The new dock measures 270x175x41 mm and is a flat minimalistic design product that can fit both the GPU and the power supply. Minisforum previously attempted to make such a dock as part of the B550 Mini-PC, which attached directly to the full PCIe interface without cabling. In this case, users have more flexibility, as they can unplug the OCuLink connection at any time and use it with other devices.

The system is equipped with one ATX 24-pin power connector and one PCIe 4.0 slot with 16 lanes, though only 4 lanes are used due to OCuLink’s limitations. It also includes a signal amplification chip, although its specifics and usage aren’t detailed. Typically, shorter OCuLink cables provide better signal quality, which is true for all PCIe-based connections. Worth noting that this product is not bundled with the cable, at least there is no mention of that in the product detail.

Minisforum claims the DEG1 supports both RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX graphics cards. However, users must choose their power supply carefully. Since the PSU only powers the GPU (the RTX 4090 FE has max TGP of 600W).

The DEG1 eGPU dock is priced at $99/€90, and it is now shipping. The company did not release any press release or provided any samples, so no reviews are available at this time.
