GeForce RTX 4090 26Gbps GDDR6X memory mod yields 13% higher performance

NVIDIA did not launch GeForce RTX 4090 SUPER so overclockers made their own

RTX 4090, RTX 4080 SUPER and RTX 3090 Ti combined to create a true OC monster

The TecLab team worked on a new project they named RTX 4090 SUPER. This name may be misleading because NVIDIA never launched such a graphics card, but the card modified by the team is modified to the point when it has hardly anything to do with the original 4090.

The main upgrade is the memory, borrowed from the RTX 4080 SUPER, currently the only model shipping with 23 Gbps speed out of the box. Furthermore, the team used the RTX 3090 Ti GALAX HOF (Hall of Fame) PCB, known for its powerful GPU section and, more importantly, its overclocking headroom.

TecLab is known for their mods and extreme overclocking attempts, which have allowed them to secure several world records, including being among the first to reach the 3 GHz barrier on previous-gen GPUs. Many of these attempts required using XOC (Extreme OC) BIOS, physical modifications to the boards, or cherry-picking the best-performing processors.

In this project, they used the GALAX RTX 3090 Ti HOF as a donor for the board. This was the flagship OC board from GALAX, featuring a 28-phase VRM design and dual 16-pin power connectors. It’s worth noting that the RTX 3090 Ti was often described as a ‘test vehicle’ for the RTX 4090 due to GPU compatibility and because it was the first card with 12VHWPR connectors. It turns out it is even possible to swap the GPU, proving that those rumors were true. The only missing feature is NVLINK, which does not exist on the RTX 4090. Technically, this is now the first 4090 with such a connector, although it doesn’t work.

The team replaced the board’s 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory with RTX 4080 SUPER memory, rated for 24 Gbps, although the card only uses 23 Gbps out of the box. They then proceeded to overclock the memory to 26 Gbps.

Ultimately, the card scored 17,454 points in Superposition, which is a 39% higher score than stock. This score includes GPU, memory, and LOD overclocking. However, the most interesting detail is memory overclocking (from 21 Gbps to 26 Gbps), unlocking 13% higher performance alone. This clearly indicates how the memory upgrade can contribute to higher performance, especially in memory-bound benchmarks like 8K Superposition.

The next-gen RTX 50 series is expected to come with 28 Gbps memory by default, which will likely boost performance significantly. This highlights the potential of memory-starved software when equipped with higher memory clocks. TecLab’s overclocking efforts have already pushed the maximum bandwidth from 1 TB/s to over 1.2 TB/s. The upcoming RTX 5090 model, rumored to feature a 512-bit memory bus, could offer a bandwidth of 1.8 TB/s.
