MSI marks 20 years since debuting its first laptop

MSI’s first laptop came out 20 years ago

The company looks back at its history and achievements in laptop making.

MSI has marked its 20th anniversary in the laptop industry with a celebratory video. The company entered the market much later than competitors. ASUS, for instance, introduced the P6300 laptop in 1997, and HP had their first laptop in 1984. MSI recognized the increasing demand for laptops and used this to its advantage. Currently, the company is gearing up to launch its latest series, featuring AMD Strix Point APUs, expected to debut later this month.

MSI’s first laptop, the M510C, came with an Intel Centrino processor and Radeon 9600/9700 Mobility graphics. This 15-inch laptop included DDR-3000 memory (up to 2GB), an optical drive, and WiFi-G support, and it had a weight of 2.9 kilograms.

The company also talks about the GX600 design from 2007 in their video, noted as the first overclockable gaming laptop. This model featured GeForce 8600M GT graphics.

Currently, MSI’s most powerful laptop may be the MSI TITAN 18 PRO Ryzen Edition. This model boasts 16 Zen4 cores and can be equipped with up to GeForce RTX 4090 graphics. It weighs 800 grams more than MSI’s first laptop but features a larger 18-inch screen and significantly improved cooling technology. One thing is clear, the drop of optical drives in modern laptops has allowed manufacturers to save considerable space.

MSI has branched out into new markets, focusing on premium laptops with lightweight designs, all-metal bodies, and bigger batteries. With new architectures like AMD Strix Point and Intel Lunar Lake, these laptops promise longer battery life thanks to efficient cores and speedy graphics, even though they come with higher price tags.

Unlike its competitors, MSI has steered clear of Chrome OS/Chromebook-based laptops and hasn’t joined Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite launch. Definitely something to consider in the next 20 years.
