AMD to disable AI core on the upcoming Ryzen APU

Guess it won’t be Ryzen AI processor.

AMD is reportedly adding a new Ryzen 8000 SKU, the Ryzen 7 8845HS , which appears to be a downgraded version of the 8845HS. According to reliable AMD leaker Golden Pig Upgrade, the main difference lies in the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) also known as XDNA processor, which will be entirely disabled in the Ryzen 7 8845HS.

While AMD has previously released APUs with disabled graphics, this move marks the first time the NPU core has been specifically targeted for segmentation. This change could impact certain machine learning capabilities but should not affect the CPU and GPU performance. Additionally, since the Ryzen 8040 series is not certified for Microsoft Copilot+PC due to the first-gen XDNA being too slow, the disabling of the NPU in the Ryzen 7 8845HS does not impact this aspect either.

If AMD maintains the same CPU and GPU specs, the Ryzen 7 8845HS would be a 35 to 45W TDP SKU. It would feature 8 Zen 4 cores with a boost clock up to 5.1 GHz and retain its full RDNA3 graphics with 12 Compute Units (Radeon 780M).

AMD has not yet listed this new SKU, and its launch scope remains uncertain. Non-standard parts like these are sometimes limited to specific regions, but they can also be available globally. So far, most laptop and mini-PC system makers have opted for the 8945HS or 8845HS variants for their devices with cheaper systems using Ryzen 7040 series featuring nearly identical specs with slower XDNA processor.
