Game server providers switching sides, now steering customers towards Ryzen 9 7950X based systems

Intel’s 13th and 14th generation CPUs, specifically the 13900K and 14900K, have been plagued by stability issues, frustrating both gamers and data center operators. Reports of system crashes, blue screens, and intermittent errors have surfaced, making it difficult for users to fully rely on these high-performance chips. The problems seem to come from deeper hardware issues, not just BIOS or microcode updates. Many gamers, looking for high single-thread clock speeds, find their gaming experience disrupted.
Level1Techs investigations into game telemetry data (from Oodle) indicates that Intel CPUs are far more represented in error logs compared to AMD CPUs. For instance, one database showed 1,431 decompression errors out of 1,584 total errors over 90 days were linked to Intel’s 13th and 14th generation CPUs. In contrast, AMD CPUs had only four instances of similar errors.

The issue is not limited to gaming PCs, data centers deploying these CPUs for game servers have also reported high crash rates, even on motherboards designed for maximum stability. Data centers have noted an increasing rate of errors over time, even on the reliable W680 chipset.
Discussions with data center providers revealed that support incidents for these CPUs have been unusually high, leading to increased support costs and CPU swaps. These stability issues have also impacted multiplayer gaming experiences, with some developers fearing significant losses in player engagement due to frequent server crashes. One quoted a potential $100K loss of revenue because gamers will assume that the problem is the game rather than their high-end PC or the hardware in the game server itself.

As noted by Level1Techs, the lack of clear communication from Intel only makes the problem worse. While AMD promptly addressed similar issues in the past, Intel has yet to provide a definitive solution or assurance to affected users. Gamers and data center operators are left in uncertainty, with many resorting to replacing CPUs or switching to AMD.
Intel has not yet confirmed the root cause of the issue, but the company has made several steps addressing the problem. First by forcing motherboard makers to include Baseline Intel profiles and later by patching a Thermal Velocity Boost bug that was a contributing factor.
