AMD Ryzen 9 9950X delivers 20% performance boost in Blender over Ryzen 9 7950X at 230W

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X tested in Blender at five power settings

AnandTech forum user “Igor_Kavinski” claims to have access to the Ryzen 9 9950X, an upcoming desktop processor based on the Zen 5 architecture, set to launch later this month. The sample in Igor’s possession is an engineering unit, which may differ from the final retail version. Engineering samples often have lower clock speeds, especially months before the official release, but this particular unit appears to be performing at or above expected levels, with no apparent limitations in clock speed or power.

Igor has been sharing some data, mainly focusing on the Blender benchmark, a demanding 3D rendering test for CPUs similar to Cinebench. The test system featured Precision Boost Overdrive, water cooling, and a 230W PPT (Package Power Tracking).

The CPU was able to boost up to 5.62 GHz, which, while impressive, is still below AMD’s official turbo clock for the Ryzen 9 9950X (5.7 GHz). This could be due to the engineering sample’s potential limitations. What’s worth noting, though, is that despite high power, the temperature never exceeded 62 degrees Celsius.

Another forum user contributed by sharing benchmarks for the Ryzen 9 7950X under similar PPT levels. Overall, the Ryzen 9 9950X appears to show around 20% improvement over the 7950X at 230W. Performance gap narrows at lower power settings, though:

The AMD Ryzen 9000 series is scheduled to launch on July 31. While AMD has not officially confirmed the release date or pricing, rumors indicate that the pricing could be close to that of the Ryzen 9 7950X at launch, possibly a bit lower. Proper samples have already been distributed to the press, and AMD is reportedly sending stock to retailers and distributors. We may soon see new test results from these sources.
