HP’s upcoming laptop to feature Ryzen AI 300 processor with 55 TOPS NPU, surpassing HX 370 SKU in speed

HP reveals OmniBook Ultra with the fastest NPU on the market, another variant of AMD Ryzen AI 300 incoming?

HP has issued a press release claiming to have the fastest Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on the market. They describe their upcoming laptop as “the world’s highest performance AI PC with up to an industry-leading 55 TOPS of NPU performance.” This announcement indicates that the new HP laptop will feature an NPU that outperforms those in the already-announced Ryzen AI 300 powered laptops.

The claim suggests that the HP laptop will either include a custom version of the Ryzen AI 300 processor or an unreleased AMD processor. Currently, the fastest Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 APU offers 50 TOPS of NPU performance. Both announced Ryzen NPUs have the same performance, as the built-in XDNA2 processor is not modified for specific SKUs. HP’s announcement indicates that their APU will offer 5 TOPS more, setting a new benchmark for AI performance in laptops.

Meet the first HP OmniBook Ultra 14-inch Next Gen AI PC. This device:

  • Inspires without compromise: Unleash endless creativity with the device’s AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 series processor with integrated AMD Radeon™ 800M graphics. 7 Its powerful NPU 8 offers unparalleled performance and up to 21 hours of battery life. 9
  • Supercharges productivity: The OmniBook Ultra is co-engineered with AMD to enable up to 55 TOPS of NPU performance . HP AI Companion optimizes the device for greater productivity and brings AI tools and solutions onto the device. 10 It will soon offer expanded functionality for managing PC settings and troubleshooting HP products.

Recently, the popular CPU-Z software for processor monitoring was updated to support upcoming AMD Strix Point APUs. Among these is the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, a model not previously mentioned by AMD. Even a week after this update, the developers have not corrected it as a typo. This suggests that it wasn’t an error and that such a model may indeed be forthcoming.

It’s possible that the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 variant mentioned in CPU-Z could be the one HP plans to use for their laptop. Previously, AMD has overclocked the XDNA processor during the transition from Ryzen 7040 to 8040, boosting NPU performance by 60% to achieve up to 16 TOPS for AI acceleration.
