AMD Ryzen 9 9950X hits nearly 6 GHz, tops single-core performance charts

A pre-launch sample shows significantly improved performance through overclocking.

AMD has announced the postponement of the Ryzen 9000 launch due to undisclosed manufacturing issues. The company plans to recall units sent to distributors and replace them with new ones. It is unclear whether the issue affects performance or has any effect on even earlier units, such as engineering samples often used by motherboard makers and overclockers.

The Ryzen 9 9950X is a 16-core Zen5 processor with a 5.7 GHz max boost and a default TDP of 170W, the highest among all Granite Ridge SKUs. It is unclear how much this power setting has been increased in the case of the following sample.

It appears that at least one such engineering sample is performing well in Geekbench charts. Someone overclocked a 9950X sample to 5953 MHz, achieving scores of 3700 points in single-core and, 26000 in multi-core tests. These results are much higher than previously seen.

Worth noting is that AMD themselves have overclocked the processor to 6.6 and even 6.7 GHz. However, this involved liquid nitrogen, which is not something everyone can afford or has the necessary tools to achieve. Additionally, that testing focused on Cinebench, not Geekbench, so we have no data for comparison.

According to the chart where we collect all scores featuring engineering samples, it appears that the new results are at least 10% faster in single-core and 26% faster in multi-core compared to previously reported results.
