NVIDIA introduces GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory, offering ‘similar’ performance to GDDR6X version

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 edition to launch in September

The leaks were true, there’s a new GDDR6 version of RTX 4070 which is said to have similar performance to existing SKU with GDDR6X memory.

NVIDIA has confirmed the release of the new RTX 4070 GDDR6, a variant of the existing model that was upgraded to SUPER specs in January. The company has kept its original RTX 4070 card on the market, with no indication of discontinuing it. Today, NVIDIA has introduced a new version of this model.

The only difference is the memory upgrade, now featuring GDDR6 memory clocked at 20 Gbps, instead of the GDDR6X’s 21 Gbps. According to the official specs, both cards have the same clock speeds, memory capacity, and presumably the same TDP settings. The card did not appear as a new SKU but was listed as a ‘GDDR6’ variant of the existing model.

As far as the specs are concerned, the card features AD104-251 GPU with 5888 CUDA Cores. The 12GB memory is attached to a 192-bit interface, which combined with slower memory means 5% lower bandwidth (480 GB/s instead of 504 GB/s).

NVIDIA officially claims that the card will have ‘similar’ performance in games, but there’s no chart of any specific data associated with these claims:

To improve supply and availability to meet strong demand, we’re introducing the GeForce RTX 4070 with extra fast GDDR6 memory. All of the other specs remain the same. It offers similar performance in games and applications.

It will be available from our graphics cards partners worldwide, starting in September. It is supported in today’s Game Ready Driver. For more details on the GeForce RTX 4070, visit the GeForce RTX 4070 family product page on GeForce.com.

The card is expected to have the same 200W TDP and will support either 12VHPWR or 8-pin power connectors. The MSRP is likely to be identical to the existing model, which is $549, the updated price for the RTX 4070 after the SUPER variant was released in January.

It’s worth noting that none of the already announced custom designs have any visible marketing highlighting the GDDR6 memory specs. You never know when you might buy the GDDR6 version by mistake, so be cautious.
