AMD mid-range AM5 series with 800-series chipsets no sooner than 2025

AMD reportedly not ready to launch new mid-range motherboards yet.

ComputerBase, who are present at Gamescom, report that numerous motherboard makers have said the B850 and B840 series should launch next year. These new AM5-based motherboards are expected to support three generations of Ryzen CPUs: 7000, 8000, and the recently launched 9000 series.

The pricing for the upcoming X870 and X870E motherboards has not yet been confirmed by any company, but it is expected to be revealed very soon. However, it is generally anticipated that the new boards will be pricier than current 600-series boards, including the X670E/X670 models, which have been on the market for two years now. The B650(E) models have been particularly popular among AMD users, as they offer more or less the same performance as higher-end models but with limited lanes or features.

The successor, called B850, will also support overclocking and is targeting the mainstream market, while the B840 is a new segment with limited PCIe support to Gen3, aimed at the commercial and entry-level segments.

Perhaps because the 800-series boards were not ready for the Ryzen 9000 launch, full feature support is available on existing 600-series boards. All major boards have already been updated to support the new Zen5-based series. Meanwhile, the 800-series boards are expected to support faster memory and, depending on the model, come equipped with WiFi 7 support.
