Easier GPU removal with next-gen motherboards

Removing a graphics card from the motherboard can be tricky. A few years ago, there weren’t many options for removing the cards from the system other than carefully pulling the PCIe retention mechanism, which is neither easy nor safe, especially with the massive graphics cards we have in the current generation.

Thankfully, motherboard makers are finally addressing this issue. Easy graphics card removal mechanisms that eliminate the need for the old latch are now being replaced with release buttons or no buttons at all.

For the latest AMD 800-series, ASUS is introducing its PCIe Q-Release Slim GPU release feature, which eliminates the release button and simplifies this mechanism even further. The retention mechanism is built into the slot itself and won’t release the graphics card if it’s pulled from the center or the right side. However, once the card is pulled from the front (near the I/O bracket), the Q-Release mechanism will release the card easily. There’s no button involved, making it very convenient. MSI is also showcasing a new mechanism for graphics card removal at Gamescom. Their latest 800-series motherboards for Intel Arrow Lake-S desktop CPUs will feature a release mechanism, though it still relies on a button release. It’s called EZ PCIe Release, and it was showcased on the Z890 MPG EDGE motherboard, which comes in an all-white color scheme.

Other companies are likely to follow suit, we have already seen such mechanisms on Gigabyte AORUS, Biostar VALKYRIE and ASRock Taichi series, here pictured by TechPowerUP at Computex:

One thing is certain: the PCIe Express interface will remain a staple for desktop graphics cards for years to come. It’s encouraging to see simpler solutions to such a common issue. Additionally, many companies have announced easier M.2 SSD installation mechanisms, further simplifying the process of building PCs.
