These big AirTag 2 upgrades will make you want to upgrade

According to Bloomberg , Apple is working on a second generation version of its popular and affordable item tracker, the , which initially debuted in 2021. Here’s everything what we’re expecting Apple to deliver with 2 later this year.

In a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman a few weeks ago, 2 has “progressed in manufacturing tests”, and there are three key upgrades to expect:

  • Improved wireless chip
  • Higher focus on privacy

Apple will reportedly introduce a new ultrawide band chip in the next generation , allowing for up to triple the range with precision finding. This means you’ll be able to track your AirTags from 30-90 meters away, vs just 10-30 meters away with the current generation version. A newer wireless chip could also improve location accuracy in less densely populated areas.

In the past, people have used AirTags for stalking , and some have even modified AirTags to the built in speaker, making it harder for Apple to make targeted users aware of a nearby . Improvements in anti-stalking features would hopefully make it easier for targeted users to locate AirTags.

2 is expected to release in mid 2025, according to Bloomberg :

Apple is working on a new AirTag — code-named B589 — for release around the middle of next year.

In the meanwhile, if you’re considering buying the current generation of , they’re currently on sale, with a available for $23, and a for $69.99. With the 4 pack, thats around $18 per !
