US cyber expert Wang Xiaofeng took Singapore job before FBI raids: university letter

US cybersecurity expert Wang Xiaofeng had allegedly planned to join a university in Singapore before the FBI raided his homes on Friday, according to a letter from the provost of Indiana University, Bloomington (IUB) obtained by Indiana Public Media.

The letter informed Wang, a tenured professor of computer science, engineering and informatics, that the university “has decided to terminate your employment effective immediately”.

It was dated Friday, the same day the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched Wang’s two homes in Indiana. The FBI said the searches in the cities of Bloomington and Carmel were carried out under a court warrant, but authorities did not disclose the grounds for the operation.

“It is my understanding that you have informed the chair of your department that you have accepted a faculty appointment with a university in Singapore and will start your role there this summer,” the university’s provost and executive vice-president wrote to Wang. “Please note that you will not be eligible for rehire with Indiana University.”

The Indiana Daily Student, a student-led publication covering the Indiana University community, reported that a university spokesperson did not confirm the document’s veracity, adding that the institution would not make any public comment about the investigation or status of the faculty member.

The security raids of Wang’s homes have reignited fears of racial profiling in Trump-led America, under what some are calling a de facto “ China Initiative 2.0 ” in reference to a programme launched in 2018 by the first Trump administration to fight suspected Chinese theft of technical secrets and intellectual property.

Wang is a noted computer scientist known for his research on security and privacy issues in mobile and cloud computing, and privacy issues in the dissemination and computation of human genomic data.

His more recent research focus has been on data protection to support AI and using AI technologies, such as natural language processing and deep learning, to protect computing systems and 5G networks.
