New Apple TV+ series gives ‘Bridgerton meets Bake-Off’ vibes

Yesterday Apple TV+ premiered a brand new series, , and it’s yet another recent debut to earn a strong critical reception. Here are the details.

Carême this week with its first two episodes. New episodes will drop Wednesdays through June 11.

It’s easily the buzziest French series Apple has debuted so far. It’s gotten more press from Apple than any other foreign language show I can recall, and boasts a cast and creative team.

Reviews are consistently positive so far, here are some quotes from critics:

  • : “Bridgerton gets into bed with Bake-Off.”
  • : “Careme is a sexy historical kitchen drama.”
  • : “[It] is always enjoyable when period dramas undo their top buttons and hitch up their hemlines.”

Here’s Apple’s description of the show, followed by its trailer:

“Carême” follows the thrilling story of the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême (Benjamin Voisin), who rose from humble beginnings in Paris to the height of culinary stardom in Napoleon’s Europe. While he dreams only of becoming the most famous chef in the world, his talent and ambitions attract the attention of renowned and powerful politicians, who use him as a spy for France. Determined to escape poverty and fulfill his dream, Carême can choose revenge, or he can have it all — women, wealth, fame — but at what cost? His love? His soul? His life?

Last year, the French-language fashion drama debuted on Apple TV+, but seemed to get lost amid a flood of other great content. The show’s producer recently called Apple the “worst marketer in the universe” for TV, claiming the company did nothing to promote the show.

Here’s hoping the stronger push behind Carême will help it succeed.
