AMD next-gen AM5 platform to feature LGA1718 socket

ExecutableFix has revealed the first details on the upcoming next-gen AMD socket.

AMD AM5, the successor to AM4 is to feature an LGA1718 socket. AMD is apparently changing its socket type from PGA to LGA (land grid array), which means there be no pins on the next-gen AMD processors, instead, pins will be located on the motherboard socket.

The leaker confirmed the platform will support dual-channel DDR5 memory, but surprisingly, PCI Express Gen5 support is to be exclusive to Zen4 Genoa (EPYC) processors. This means that the next-gen AMD consumer processors will retain PCIe Gen4 support. AMD AM5 processors are to compete with Intel Alder Lake-S, which is now confirmed to support PCIe Gen5 interface as well as DDR5.

Furthermore, ExecuFix confirmed that next-gen Zen4 processors are to retain the 40mm square size of AM4 based package.

At this moment it also unknown when is AMD planning to launch its next-generation AM5 motherboard series, but ExecutableFix believes that those will be 600 series, so a successor to the existing X570 and upcoming X570S refresh, still featuring AM4 socket.

It is rumored that the first consumer Zen4 and AM5 products are to be codenamed, Raphael. Previous rumors have suggested that we might see Raphael launch in 2022. In fact, even late 2022 was mentioned . This would suggest that the Intel Alder Lake platform would not only be first to market but also support both DDR5 and PCIe Gen5 long before the AMD AM5 platform.
