PSA: You’ll need a new charger to take advantage of iPhone 17 Pro’s fast charging

With the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple announced that they’ll be capable of charging even faster than previous iPhone models: up to 50% in just 20 minutes. While that is true, it’s thanks to a brand new USB-PD specification, which isn’t widely available on the market yet.

In short, you’ll need to buy Apple’s new if you want to charge your iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max as quickly as possible, at least for now. This is because Apple’s charging brick is the only option on the market that supports this new USB-PD 3.2 SPR AVS specification.

Of course, it’s likely only a matter of time before there’s third party options on the market. It’s not like Apple is using a proprietary specification – it’s just a brand new one. Apple sells its for $39, which isn’t completely insane, though it is pretty high up there.

iPhone 17 pre-orders opened yesterday. All of the new iPhone models, , and new will be available to customers next Friday, September 19th. Accessories like this new are already available in for customers. You can also pick them up .

Other fast chargers on the market, like Anker’s , will also fast charge the iPhone 17 Pro, just not as rapidly. You’ll gain roughly 50% in 30 minutes, rather than 20 minutes. On the plus side, Anker’s comes in at two-thirds of the cost and includes a 6ft USB-C cable.
