The shift from MediaTek's proposal to production is limited by technology and compliance, especially for automotive or safety-critical silicon. Automotive-grade chips demand rigorous traceability and quality controls, including compliance with standards such as IATF 16949 and qualification regimes like AEC Q100 for discrete components. TSMC has developed automotive variants of some nodes that enhance statistical process control and defect detection; however, it is unclear whether Fab 21 currently mirrors the automotive flows used in the company's Taiwan fabs. Arizona output would likely serve infotainment, connectivity, and other non-safety critical applications rather than advanced driver assistance or powertrain controllers that require ISO 26262-related assurances.
